Pearl Care Guide
Caring for Your South Sea Pearls
South Sea pearls are among nature's most extraordinary treasures. Unlike gemstones mined from the earth, pearls are organic gems formed within living oysters — and their beauty deserves thoughtful care to preserve their natural luster for generations. With proper care, an Ishara South Sea pearl necklace can become a treasured heirloom, passed from one generation to the next.
The Golden Rule · Last On, First Off
Pearls should be the last piece of jewelry you put on, and the first you remove. This simple habit protects them from exposure to perfume, hairspray, cosmetics, sunscreen, body lotion, and household chemicals — all of which can gradually dull their natural luster.
Wear Them Often
One of the best ways to care for your pearls is simply to wear them. Natural skin oils help maintain their beautiful glow. We encourage you to enjoy your Ishara pearls regularly, rather than reserving them for special occasions alone.
After Each Wear
Using a soft microfiber or cotton cloth, gently wipe each pearl after wearing to remove any traces of perspiration, cosmetics, or environmental residue. This simple practice preserves their natural brilliance over time.
Storage
Store separately. Pearls are softer than most gemstones and precious metals. To prevent scratching, store them apart from other jewelry — ideally in the Ishara jewelry pouch or presentation box, away from diamonds, gemstones, watches, or metal chains.
Avoid airtight storage. Pearls benefit from a small amount of natural humidity. Avoid plastic bags, vacuum-sealed containers, or extremely dry environments.
Avoid excessive heat. Keep pearls away from direct sunlight for prolonged periods, hot vehicles, heaters, and other heat sources. Extreme temperatures may affect the pearl’s organic structure and luster.
Water & Swimming
Remove your pearl jewelry before swimming pools, hot tubs, ocean swimming, and sauna sessions. Chlorine, salt, and chemical treatments can damage the nacre over time.
Perfume & Cosmetics
Always apply perfume, hair products, makeup, and lotion before putting on your pearls — and allow them to dry completely before wearing your jewelry.
Cleaning
For routine cleaning, dampen a soft cloth with clean water, gently wipe the pearls, and dry immediately with a clean cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, jewelry cleaning solutions, and harsh detergents. Pearls should never be cleaned like diamonds or other gemstones.
Restringing
Pearl necklaces are traditionally strung on silk thread, which naturally stretches with wear over time. We recommend a professional inspection every one to two years for frequently worn necklaces. Signs your necklace may need restringing include loose pearls, visible gaps, frayed silk, or stretched thread.
Traveling with Pearls
Store pearls in the Ishara pouch or jewelry box when traveling, pack them in carry-on luggage whenever possible, and avoid placing heavy objects on top of jewelry cases.
Natural Characteristics
Every South Sea pearl is unique. Natural characteristics — subtle growth marks, surface textures, variations in overtone, slight differences in shape — are part of each pearl’s individuality and beauty. At Ishara, we celebrate the authenticity that makes every pearl truly one of a kind.
A Legacy of Beauty
With proper care, South Sea pearls remain beautiful for generations. An Ishara necklace is more than jewelry — it is a timeless expression of elegance, craftsmanship, and nature’s extraordinary artistry. Treat your pearls with care, wear them with confidence, and allow them to become part of your story.
