Pearl Grading Guide

South Sea Pearl Grading Guide

Understanding South Sea Pearl Quality

Every South Sea pearl is a unique creation of nature. Unlike diamonds, there is no single internationally standardized grading system used across all pearl producers, wholesalers, and jewelry houses — grading terminology may vary between farms, laboratories, and brands. At Ishara, we evaluate every necklace using the characteristics most widely recognized throughout the pearl industry: luster, surface quality, shape, matching, color, and size. Together, these factors determine the overall beauty, rarity, and value of a pearl necklace.

Luster · The Most Important Factor

Luster refers to the quality and intensity of light reflected from a pearl’s surface. High-quality South Sea pearls display bright reflections, a deep inner glow, sharp light return, and rich visual depth — and luster is widely considered the single most important factor in pearl beauty.

  • Excellent — Mirror-like reflections with exceptional brilliance
  • Good — Bright reflections with an attractive, warm glow
  • Fair — Softer reflections and less visual depth

Surface Quality

Because pearls are natural gems, minor surface characteristics are completely normal — growth marks, dimples, natural texture, and small spots are all part of their organic origin. The fewer visible imperfections, the higher the pearl’s value.

  • Excellent — Very clean appearance with minimal visible characteristics
  • Good — Minor natural characteristics visible only upon close inspection
  • Commercial — Noticeable natural characteristics, but still attractive overall

Shape

Perfectly round pearls are among the rarest and most valuable. South Sea pearls naturally occur in several shapes — round, near-round, oval, drop, and baroque. At Ishara, our necklace collections primarily feature round and near-round South Sea pearls.

Matching

Matching refers to how consistently pearls are paired within a strand — across size, shape, color, luster, and surface. Exceptional matching creates harmony and visual balance throughout the necklace, and is a hallmark of a truly fine strand.

Color

South Sea pearls are naturally available in a remarkable range of colors. At Ishara, we classify our necklaces into three color families:

  • Classic — Predominantly white South Sea pearls; elegant, timeless, and versatile
  • Soleil — A harmonious blend of white, silver, champagne, and gold; inspired by the warmth of the tropical sun
  • Celestial — Silver-dominant pearls with cool, luminous tones; inspired by moonlight reflected on the ocean

Size & Rarity

South Sea pearls are among the largest cultured pearls in the world. In general, larger pearls are rarer and more valuable — but size alone does not determine quality. A smaller pearl with exceptional luster and matching may be more desirable than a larger pearl with poor luster or significant surface imperfections.

The Ishara Quality Scale

To provide clarity and transparency, Ishara uses a simplified grading system across our collections.

AA Grade — Exceptional overall quality. Excellent luster, very good surface, strong matching, and high visual impact. Reserved for our finest necklaces.

A Grade — Premium quality. Good to excellent luster, minor natural characteristics, very attractive matching, and a strong luxury appearance. Many Signature, Queen, and Imperial necklaces fall within this category.

A− Grade — Strong commercial luxury quality. Good luster, visible but acceptable natural characteristics, and excellent value. Many Prestige, Lumière, and Heritage necklaces fall within this category.

B+ Grade — Good everyday luxury quality. Attractive natural pearls with more visible natural characteristics and excellent wearability — an ideal entry point into South Sea pearls. Often found within Essential and Petite collections.

Natural Beauty, Not Perfection

South Sea pearls are organic gems created by nature. Unlike manufactured products, every pearl carries its own unique character. Subtle variations in shape, color, and surface are not flaws — they are part of what makes each necklace truly one of a kind. At Ishara, we believe true luxury lies not in absolute perfection, but in authenticity, rarity, and the extraordinary beauty that only nature can create.
